Collective Humanity is a community-based, Cambodian nonprofit organization empowering socially and economically marginalized women as they rise above poverty. It is named as a reminder of our shared commonalities as human beings and our responsibility to take care of one another. Artisan women, whose ages range from 20s to 50s, are free to work from home in open air studios. Flexible schedules enable them to earn an income and simultaneously balance their family responsibilities. Within the village, there is a large sense of community based on trust and transparency.
Artisans at Collective Humanity are committed to environmentally conscious practices. In a completely sustainable process, each throw is natural dyed with ingredients including coconuts, seeds, and leaves, which are harvested from the land surrounding the studio. Botanical dyes are often used in the process. Rice husks (that would otherwise be thrown away) are burned to heat the kiln; the rest is spread across the yard as a fertilizer. Once the cotton is dyed, artisans begin to string the looms in preparation for weaving, a rare art form with a rich history in Cambodia. These beautiful, labor-intensive techniques have been preserved over decades and passed down across generations.
Located in Southeast Asia, Cambodia has a mostly flat terrain with mountains in the southwestern and northern regions. Agriculture includes rice, corn, and vegetables, while popular industries are tourism, rice milling, fishing, wood, construction, and garments. The nation has seen strong economic growth and development in the recent past; from 2000 to 2010, the GDP grew at an average annual rate of more than 8 percent. However, Cambodia is one of the poorest nations within the continent of Asia.
