Located in Southeast Asia, Cambodia has a mostly flat terrain with mountains in the southwestern and northern regions. Agriculture includes rice, corn, and vegetables, while popular industries are tourism, rice milling, fishing, wood, construction, and garments. The nation has seen strong economic growth and development in the recent past; from 2000 to 2010, the GDP grew at an average annual rate of more than 8 percent. However, Cambodia is one of the poorest nations within the continent of Asia.

Phnom Penh is the capital of Cambodia and one of the major urban areas within the country. Cambodia has a population of more than 15.9 million people, according to The World Factbook by the CIA. Approximately 96.9 percent of the population practices Buddhism, which is the nation’s official religion. Islam, Christianity, and other religions are also practiced. Khmer (the country's official language), French, and English are the primary languages spoken.

From Cambodia: Meet the Artisan

Penh Lenh

In 2013, Rachel Dodson founded Penh Lenh, which is based in the capital of Cambodia, Phnom Penh. The organization has a mission of empowering marginalized and at-risk young females in Cambodia. Penh Lenh, which means “whole,” helps to provide a high quality of education, vocational training, career opportunities and professional skills, and finance and budget training to these young women who are part of the organization. This also ultimately benefits the larger community.
