Fair Trade Products
The Little Market seeks out handmade products that are meaningful for their beauty, as well as the change they create for the artisans who crafted them. While corporations and businesses have bottom lines that are in dollars and cents, The Little Market measures success by how many lives are improved or positively impacted through our work. We are proud to be a part of a fair trade community that shares our values.
Fair Trade is an approach to international trade centered around equitable partnerships, transparency and respect. It seeks to empower marginalized producers by providing them safe working conditions, fair pay, and a means to establish a sustainable business free from exploitation. As a member of the Fair Trade Federation, we are committed to the following principles:
Fair Trade Federation Principles
Create Opportunities for Economically and Socially Marginalized Producers
The Little Market works with artisans in impoverished and marginalized communities around the world. They live in extreme poverty, and many of them are women or individuals with disabilities. Employment prospects, if any exist, often pay below a living wage and have dangerous work conditions. The Little Market offers our artisan partners the opportunity to earn an income in an empowering work environment.
Develop Transparent and Accountable Relationships
We seek collaborative, transparent relationships with our artisan partners where we share our values, processes, and goals.
We are committed to partnerships that will improve our artisans partners’ skills and their access to markets. Many of our artisan partners offer skill building workshops and technical training.
Promote Fair Trade
We work to raise awareness about fair trade through our website and social media, by highlighting key principles and sharing the stories of our artisan partners.
Pay Promptly and Fairly
Fair Trade empowers artisans and producers to set prices within the framework of the true costs of labor, time, materials, sustainable growth, and related factors. We comply with international, national, local, and Fair Trade Minimum standards to ensure that our artisans are paid fairly and promptly.
Support Safe and Empowering Working Conditions
Our partners provide a safe and empowering work environment for artisans--whether this means that women have the opportunity to work from home so they can care for their families, or that artisans making ceramics and glassware have safe and secure access to special tools at their workshops.
Ensure the Rights of Children
We support the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. We do not condone child trafficking and exploitative child labor.
Cultivate Environmental Stewardship
We pay close attention to what materials are being used in our products, and we partner with artisans who are committed to sustainability. We work to offer products that have been repurposed, or use recycled or sustainable materials.
Respect Cultural Identity
Tradition and culture are at the heart of the products we carry at The Little Market. We look for products that celebrate and promote the techniques and traditions of the communities where they come from.
