INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY / PANELS / A Conversation with Community Leaders in the HIV + GBV Space

Liesl Gerntholtz facilitates a conversation with Charlize Theron and three of Charlize’s on-the-ground partners from South Africa, Audery February, Lucinda Evans, and Sofia Neves. They discuss the critical role that community-led organizations play in responding to HIV, gender-based violence, and other problems South African youth face. They emphasize the importance of building the leadership of women and young people and how creating opportunities for them leads to sustainable and inclusive change for marginalized and vulnerable communities.

South Africa faces two epidemics of HIV and violence against women. Young women are disproportionately vulnerable to both. South Africa has the largest number of people living with HIV and, while it has made significant progress toward making HIV treatment and care available, HIV prevention initiatives lag behind. Violence against women and girls is a significant driver of HIV infection.

Survival depends on all of us getting together.

Charlize Theron

The Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project (CTAOP) advances health, education, and community support for youth living in South Africa. The organization was created with the hope of making a difference in fighting HIV in South Africa, which has the largest number of people living with HIV in the world. By providing funding, building capacity, and bringing awareness to the work of its Program Partners, CTAOP invests in the futures of young people, supporting their ability to keep themselves safe from HIV/AIDS.

the little market is proud to partner with CTAOP.

Since Fall 2019, we have collaborated together to raise awareness and bring about positive change for African youth. Through our partnership, we created special edition pieces, handmade by artisans globally. For every piece in this collection, 50% of each purchase will be donated to CTAOP.
