Aliza Sokolow is an author, chef, food stylist, and crudités extraordinaire. Combining her love of food and passion for women’s empowerment, she has worked with women farmers in Ethiopia, Kenya, and India, helping advance their access to farming opportunities and resources.

As a dedicated member of our Council and an advocate for The Little Market, Aliza values ethical, eco-conscious practices in her home as much as her food. It’s one of the many reasons she believes in eating local, shopping small, and empowering women with your purchases.

ALIZA'S CRUDITÉS TIPS

A strong proponent of “eating your colors,” Aliza recommends starting at the farmers market to pick produce that catches your eye. Then to style your board, work around the outside and alternate colors and textures. For more texture, include parts of your produce that you normally wouldn’t — like the pods to your peas or the tops to your persimmons. “It’s so pretty, and it gives context to what the whole fruit or vegetable is like,” Aliza shares. This is sure to be your favorite foolproof way to serve and snack on fresh fruits and veggies.

BUILD YOUR Crudités

Bearing more than one benefit, Aliza’s takeaway tip for all your food endeavors, from crudités to cooking, is to eat in season. Shopping at the farmers market isn’t just more fun, it’s also better for your body, the environment, and local farmers. Plus, when you shop in season, the flavors naturally complement one another.

After traveling to developing countries to work with women’s organizations, namely women farmers, Aliza recounts her a-ha moment:

It felt like I finally understood my purpose to support and connect people with my favorite thing — food. It’s the through line of all my hobbies and the way I can make the most impact in my community locally and globally.
