Technique: Banana Bark Art
The packaging of Ajiri tea and coffee is incredibly unique. The intricate labels on each box are handmade by artisan women in Kisii, Kenya. They use dried banana bark as a medium, glueing together miniature scenes inspired by daily life. One even depicts a woman wearing a red dress, which is traditional Kisii clothing. Once your box of tea or coffee runs out, the labels can easily be detached and repurposed as artwork, notecards, and beyond.
Each tea bag is tied with twine made from dried banana leaves and decorated with brightly colored beads made from recycled magazine paper by artisan women in their 70s and 80s.
