The Stories

of Kantha Quilts:

Upcycled with

Vintage Saris

“This is good work that my family’s future depends on,” shares Rabeya, an artisan in Bangladesh.

Women’s empowerment. Human rights. Dignified workplaces. These are values that guide our mission at The Little Market. And we love supporting organizations that not only have similar core values, but also put their values into practice. It’s why we’re so excited to spotlight Basha, a social enterprise that works with artisan women in Bangladesh, including survivors of sex trafficking, to create hand-stitched kantha quilts.

Ever since 2015, we’ve been honored to share Basha’s upcycled kantha quilts in our collection. Every quilt is beautiful and eco-consciously made with vintage saris, but what makes each piece even more special is that it supports a brighter and safer future for women.

"This is good work that my family’s future depends on,"

says Rabeya, an artisan and mother of two who has been working with Basha for six years. She says that she prefers working on larger quilts, as they require more hours of work and, ultimately, lead to a better income.

With a focus on supporting sustainable livelihoods for women, Basha also provides programs for literacy and life skills, medical support, counseling, and day care for the artisans with children. The goal: Help women in Bangladesh gain practical skills, confidence, and financial independence — as leaders and entrepreneurs.

“Working at Basha helps me to develop my life financially. My children are getting a good education,” says Kohinoor Bristi, a mother and artisan with Basha. She shares that she previously lived in an unsafe environment and faced abuse. Now, she is grateful to work with Basha and see her children in school pursuing a different life from her own.

From Recycled Saris to Kantha Quilts + Blankets

Prior to learning the centuries-old kantha technique, the artisans complete a training and rehabilitation program to set them up for success.

The artisans then learn how to intricately cut the saris into small sections and layer the pieces on top of each other. They proceed to hand-sew the pieces together with a traditional kantha stitch to make a one-of-a-kind quilted blanket.

The products that we make are all made with recycled cloth so then we don’t have to worry about harming the environment,” shares Shima, an artisan with Basha.

From start to finish, the largest quilt can take up to 56 hours to complete. Depending on the size, some quilts require six to seven days to create. Each of these hours of dignified work is significant, contributing to a more equitable world where more women have economic autonomy: the capacity to make independent decisions for their financial future.
