woven promises

Woven Promises creates economic partnerships by supporting entrepreneurs in the Global South. Artisans produce, spin, weave, and dye their products by hand in Ethiopia, reflecting traditional and contemporary patterns and designs. These products create sustainable employment, access to healthcare, and a savings fund for the skilled artisans.

Cotton is among the major cash crops within Ethiopia, and it plays a key role in the culture and livelihood for many East Africans. Artisans in Ethiopia have been spinning and weaving cotton into sustainable fabrics for centuries. Now, they are fusing traditional techniques with modern designs, which allows them to preserve history and share these pieces with a larger, global audience.

To begin to create these textiles and fabrics, the cotton is harvested and then spun into yarn following a technique passed down across generations. The thread is then dyed with organic plant dyes and handwoven on a loom. This intricate weaving process creates beautiful designs and high-quality fabrics.
