Olive & Annie
Olive & Annie empowers Maasai artisans in Kenya as they work toward financial independence. It is a branch of the charitable organization She Matters, a community of survivors and advocates united against sexual violence. The name “Olive & Annie” was inspired by two young girls living at a local orphanage called ZLT Hope Homes; their mothers had unfortunately struggled with addiction following young pregnancies, poverty, and sexual assault. Many of the artisans working at Olive & Annie have had similar experiences. Through the group, these women have access to essential resources, including educational opportunities, community development workshops, and health programs.
Olive & Annie takes other comprehensive steps to oppose sexual violence, funding photography campaigns dedicated to the empowering survivors and helping guide She Matters in hiring a full-time social worker to provide professional counseling. With ZLT Hope Homes, Olive & Annie has funded rent expenses, provided more than 12,000 nutritious meals, and paid for 50 education scholarships and counting.
These beautiful moccasins are handmade by artisans at Olive & Annie in Kenya. Artisans practice a leatherworking technique within a Nairobi-based workshop, which follows human rights and labor laws according to Kenya’s policies. The moccasin production was the first of its kind for this group, and they have mastered the skill with passion for their work. Each bootie is hand-cut and stitched using ethically sourced, chrome-free dyed leather sourced from an internationally certified tannery in Athi River. Leather craftsmanship is a traditional practice of Kenyan tribes across generations, and leather production continues to be a growing market. All of the beads are purchased from local merchants within Nairobi, and mothers produce each beaded product while earning fair wages. Olive & Annie’s designs are inspired by women’s rights, human rights, and ending sexual violence.
Kenya has a population of more than 35 million people comprising of 42 ethnic groups, each with its own language and culture, as well as Asian, Arab and European Communities, which makes for a fascinating mix of traditions and cultures. Kenya’s multifaceted culture is expressed in different forms, from its people and language, food, music and dance, art, artifacts, theatre and literature to its ethnic values and ethical norms.
Kenya is among the world’s 30 poorest countries, ranking 145 out of 185 countries on the 2012 Human Development Index, and more than one-half of the country’s population lives below the poverty line on less than US $1 a day. Years of drought in this region have had a serious impact on the well-being of children, increasing malnutrition rates, morbidity and mortality.
