About The Artisans

Tribal Textiles

Tribal Textiles is a Zambia-based social enterprise that works with more than 100 artisans, including women, indigenous populations, and individuals who have been diagnosed with HIV. Drawing inspiration from local wildlife and surroundings, artisans draw, sew, and paint designs by hand on locally sourced cotton. These villagers are local to the South Luangwa Valley area and often have small plots of land. In addition to their work at Tribal Textiles, they are managing their farms during the rainy season. Tribal Textiles empowers artisans with sustainable employment, a safe and supportive work environment, housing benefits, healthcare support, nutritious meals, and training opportunities. The social enterprise not only supports these artisans, it also supports the community at-large by co-funding a local school and supporting a local orphanage.

In the first stage of this technique, artisans will cut, sew, and fray the cotton. They then soak the fabric in water and draw the design by hand using a starch mixture. This is set in the sun to dry as starched fabric and then painted and mixed with colors. Once the painting is complete, every piece is baked in an oven, which allows the textiles to become fully washable and ensures that the color stays intact. Next, the artisans will wash the fabric and scrape off the starch to unveil the final design. The fabric is set to dry in the sun once more, sewn, and completed.

About The Country

Zambia derives its name from the Zambezi River — the fourth longest river in Africa after the Nile, Congo, and Niger rivers. The country is considered the hidden gem of Africa due to its abundance of rivers, lakes, and exotic wildlife.

Zambia also contains the largest known copper reserves in Africa, and it holds 6 percent of all known copper reserves in the world. Copper exports underlie the country’s strong economic growth in recent years, but extreme rural poverty and high unemployment levels remain significant problems.
