Awamaki (which means “handmade” in Quechua) is a community-based nonprofit and social enterprise working with artisans in the Sacred Valley in Peru. The organization works with more than 140 female artisans from several different cooperatives. Many of these women are from rural farming communities. As a member of the Fair Trade Trade Federation, Awamaki provides educational programs and workshops about production, organization, quality training, and entrepreneurship. The women receive the skills and training essential to one day lead their cooperative with financial independence and self-sufficiency. Awamaki also works with local communities to build knitting centers and help smaller producers increase their capacity and reach.
Female artisans working with Awamaki create warm knits by hand by using traditional knitting, crochet, and yarn spinning techniques. In the first stage, they will combine alpaca yarn with the cotton before beginning to knit. Some of the families will continue to perform religious ceremonies before removing the alpaca hair. The baby alpaca fiber is extremely soft and hypoallergenic. The artisans locally source all the materials from Peru, including raw alpaca fiber from remote areas of Cusco.
Best known as the heart of the Inca Empire, Peru is and has been home to many diverse indigenous cultures long before the Incas arrived; its rich and varied heritage includes the ancient Incan capital of Cuzco and the lost city of Machu Picchu. The diversity, color, creativity and multiple functions of Peru's cultural identity, has serve as the fundaments for the way of life for thousands of families and communities.
