Homegirl Cafe is a social enterprise division of Homeboy Industries, a community-based nonprofit organization located in downtown Los Angeles, California. Homeboy Industries provides a second chance and a safe space for young women and men who are rebuilding their lives while escaping gang life. The team at Homegirl Cafe creates a variety of delicious foods including jams, granola, and cinnamon coffee that can be found at The Little Market. Through an 18-month training certificate program covering restaurant service and culinary arts skills, this is often the first “real job” with full-time employment they have had. In three stations, café, catering, and maintenance, they learn essential skills, meet with their case manager on a regular basis to address needs such as mental health, domestic violence, and GED testing, and participate in weekly classes.
Producers working with Homegirl Cafe create a variety of baked goods using fresh and high-quality ingredients. To create the Cafe de Olla, or cinnamon coffee, the women use oven-dried orange peels and blend freshly ground cinnamon stocks with premium ground coffee. To make the signature jams, Homegirl producers use only fresh and seasonal fruit. The jams are carefully made by hand-stirring and hand-pouring the delicious ingredients. To create the unique granola, the producers use very specific types of cooking techniques — this includes cooking with oven doors half open and at very low temperatures.
The United States of America is the third largest country in the world. ‘The land of the free’ is also the third most populous, and the most diverse country in the world. America owes this diversity to the abundant and continuous waves of immigrants, who have brought their own cultures and traditions to a vast new country. As most of the early settlers were of European origin, the country was distinctly European in customs, arts, music, and cuisine even before becoming an independent nation. However, with the new influx of immigrants from other parts of the world, the U.S. culture is now influenced by Native American, African, Polynesian, and especially Asian and Latin American. These immigrant populations have transformed American society into a truly multicultural and multiethnic mosaic. These many layers of diversity are reflected in the vast variety of artistic styles and hand-craft work. American artisans work with traditional craft materials and processes such as woodworking, textiles, metalworking, glassblowing, ceramics, etc.
