Le Souk Ceramique + Olivique
Based in Tunisia, Le Souk has grown from a garage studio to a workshop of more than 50 employees who carve beautiful serveware and utensils using wild olive wood. In a safe and supportive environment, the artisans are guaranteed fair wages, healthcare, and social security payments.
In Tunisia, Le Souk Olivique purchases raw wood, and it then takes approximately one year for the wood to dry naturally outside to avoid any splitting. The artisans use small tools for fine cutting, sand the wood, insert the wood in a food-safe finishing oil, and allow the wood to drip dry for one day. In the final stages, the artisans complete the sanding and buffing with oil and a towel. This step develops a smooth finish and locks in any moisture that may have remained in place.
With the capital, Tunis, strategically located on the Mediterranean Sea, Tunisia has been a seat of power over the centuries to the Romans, Arabs, Ottoman Turks and French. Following independence from French rule in 1956, Tunisia has been governed by only two heads of state, President Bourguiba for three decades and President Ben Ali from 1987 until 2011. The October 2011 elections brought leadership responsible for drafting a new constitution. However the assassination of the opposition leader in July 2013 resulted in calls for the current government to resign.
