THE TECHNIQUE

Vayu is working to preserve the Mexican tradition of weaving rebozos, handwoven fabric with a beautiful pattern. Rebozos have been woven for more than 400 years, and have traditionally been worn as shawls or accessories by Mexican women. Rebozos gained popularity and prestige to become a symbol of femininity in the Mexican culture. They have been worn by notable women throughout history, including Frida Kahlo, actress Maria Felix, and Mexican first lady Margarita Zavala. Though they are still worn in many rural regions, their popularity has diminished in urban areas.

Today, artisans working with Vayu in Mexico continue to weave these beautiful textiles using traditional techniques. The marbled pattern is created with the ikat technique. Ikat is an ancient Malay yarn-tying technique that involves tying the fiber into bundles, then dipping it into dye. The tied portions of the yarn resist the dye, creating intricate patterns. Artisans then weave this yarn on traditional looms to create the rebozo. After the majority of the rebozo has been woven, skilled women use a complicated and meticulous technique to finger weave and secure the last rows. Some women specialize in finger weaving, and are able to integrate intricate designs and lettering into the fabric.
