The Wayuu people are the largest indigenous ethnic group in Colombia. They live in small settlements, where they preserve the traditional language, culture, and customs that have been passed down for generations. One of the most important aspects of Wayuu culture is the art of weaving, an ancient practice that is passed from mother to daughter. The tradition is still vibrant today, and female artisans use their skills to create beautiful and intricate mochila bags.
Wayuu artisans weave their creative drawings into the bags, making each one as unique as the woman who made it. To the Wayuu, weaving is a symbol of intelligence, creativity, and wisdom. They value the intricacies of the weave, and can spend up to one month creating a single bag. Today, the bags are a large portion of Wayuu income, and allow them to preserve their way of life, while sharing their talents with the world.
Sitting at the northern tip of South America, Colombia is the only country on the continent with coastlines along the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea. With a population of nearly 48 million, Colombia is the third most populated country in South America. Unemployment levels have reached record lows at nine percent in recent years, however 13 million people live in poverty. Internal armed conflict has led to the displacement of 6.8 million people, making Colombia the world’s second largest population of internally displaced persons after Syria. Gender-based violence is rampant. Every year, tens of thousands of survivors of sexual violence face difficultly in getting access to health care services. The perpetrators of these crimes are rarely brought to justice.
