Based out of Bamako, Mali Chic is an organization that consists of approximately 195 artisans who create a range of products, including home décor and accessories, by hand, including several of the mudcloth pieces at The Little Market. Artisans are able to work from home, in their own workshops, or together on-site.

THE TECHNIQUE

To create mudcloth designs, artisans will first sew together hand-woven strips of cotton to form the cloth base. This is then soaked in water, infused with leaves, and left to air dry. The mud that is used in the next few steps is left to ferment in a clay pot for several months to a year. A coat is applied, a design is outlined, the clay is set to dry, and the cloth absorbs the color. Any extra clay is washed off, the artist applies another coat, and the cloth is left to soak once more to set the color. A caustic soda may be applied and then the cloth is finally washed and dried.
